Avoca Shire Turf Club announces Sarah Astbury as Young Members Ambassador…

Encouraging the younger generation of today to be involved with not-for-profit Clubs such as the Avoca Shire Turf Club is high on the agenda of new Young Members Ambassador, Sarah Asbury.

Known as ‘Sez’ to friends and family, volunteer and member Sarah Astbury has been around the Avoca Shire Turf Club for as long a she can remember due to her family’s involvement.

Sarah is one of three daughters of Lloyd and Colleen Astbury, whom have been members of the Club for 25 years, joining in the year they married. Lloyd is also a valued member of the committee and sponsor with his business Astbury Welding & Contracting.

The family history with the Club dates back even further to Lloyd’s grandfather, C.K. Astbury, who was a tireless volunteer and secretary to the Avoca Shire Turf Club for many years. Sarah is as passionate about the Avoca races as her family and when approached to help launch and promote the all-new Young Membership program was thrilled. “I love the buzz around the Pyrenees region when the races are on and I was very honoured with the invite to become the Club’s Young Members Ambassador,” Sarah Astbury said.

Sarah, who has family in Avoca, currently works and resides in Horsham. She went to school in Ballarat, studied hospitality at William Angliss Tafe in Melbourne and grew up in Maryborough.

She enjoys the hospitality industry because she loves meeting new people and interacting with customers. Sarah also loves fashion and will be helping judge Fashions on the Field at the PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup this year.

The Avoca Shire Turf Club hope this membership program will not only allow 18-25 year olds to socialize with each other on race day in the Young Members Enclosure, but also provide an opportunity to communicate the importance of membership in community Clubs.

‘The survival of our club is dependant on healthy membership. It helps ensure the future of Avoca’s race meetings and we hope that the Young Membership option will encourage new members to the Club who will remain as members for many years to come,” Club Manager, Gus Harrison said.

The Avoca Shire Turf Club, who have been nominated for Club of the Year by Country Racing Victoria, have a membership option for everyone, including standard membership, family membership, platinum membership and young membership. All membership options provide great value for money and a fun way to enjoy a day out at the races.

Avoca Shire Turf Club nominated for Club of the Year….

Committee, staff, volunteers and Members are all very pleased to recently hear that the Avoca Shire Turf Club has been nominated for ‘Club of Year’ within Country Racing Victoria’s Season 0910.

To be announced on Sunday the 15th of August, the judges of this award will be looking at criteria such as community engagement, volunteers, risk management systems, governance, marketing and overall race day performances.

The successful season that has been 0910 for the Avoca Shire Turf Club has included the PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup, the Melbourne Cup Fever Festival, the Mount Avoca ANZAC Day Races and the Pyrenees Festival of Racing & Tasting. In addition to this the Avoca Shire Turf Club has also hosted or managed the Avoca Cup Calcutta, Pyrenees Escapade, Family Fireworks night and the Avoca Antique Show along with numerous other non race day events.

“It certainly has been a big year for the Avoca Shire Turf Club. An increase in Club events from around four to over twenty-five in less than two years highlights why I am extremely pleased that the hard work from everyone involved and support from our partners is paying off. Just being nominated for this award is an honour on its own and we hope it will help promote just how good the Avoca races and the Pyrenees region is,” Marketing & Events Manager, Vanessa Briody commented.

Staff of the Avoca Shire Turf Club believe that the success of the season is associated with improved event management systems and processes, developed marketing initiatives, personal customer and strong stakeholder relationships and an increasing volunteer, sponsorship and membership base. In addition to this, the Avoca Races has a growing reputation around Victoria as a must do country thoroughbred racing event.

Initiatives the Avoca Shire Turf Club feel have helped grow their two race days in Season 0910 include the Melbourne Cup Tour, which the Club together with volunteer groups took advantage of the opportunity and created a three day event, that being the Melbourne Cup Fever Festival. This engaged many community groups including schools, all raising money for the local nursing home. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to hold the world famous Melbourne Cup, and was celebrated in style with a parade and party.

Another Avoca Shire Turf Club initiative, focused on increasing tourism, race day attendance and stimulating the local economy, was the Pyrenees Festival of Racing & Tasting. A success with the support of Country Racing Victoria, Tourism Victoria, the Pyrenees Grapegrowers and Winemakers Association, the Pyrenees Shire, local pubs and sponsors such as PJA Accountants, this community and volunteer ran event tied in nicely with the Mount Avoca ANZAC Day Races. The four-day festival also featured a Pyrenees Pubs Night, Winery Tours, Movie Night, ANZAC Day Dawn Service, Riverside Markets and Pyrenees Open Day, worked in bringing additional tourists to the region over a four-day period and will run again in 2011.

“Regardless of the outcome, this has provided the Club with a great opportunity to sincerely thank their volunteers, Members, supporters and partners, without which, this nomination would not be possible. We are all looking forward to the awards and would like to thank Country Racing Victoria for the nomination and congratulate the other Club’s within the category, those being Echuca, Kerang and Geelong who have all had great seasons,” Club Manager, Gus Harrison spoke.

The Avoca Shire Turf Club celebrates another successful race weekend.

It was a big task to ask….to run a four day festival that featured a Pyrenees pubs night, winery tours and movie night, all tied in with the region’s dawn service, riverside markets and local attractions as well as run the Mount Avoca ANZAC Day races, but the results and feedback speak for themselves.

3,000 patrons attended the Mount Avoca ANZAC Day Races on Sunday, doubling the crowd from the year prior and helping make it the most successful Anzac Day race meeting for the race club. Of these people many were staying at the racecourse in caravans and tents, with the Club booking in over 40 camping sites with people staying from one to three nights to enjoy the long weekend festivities. This allowed the region to house tourists who were unable to find accommodation due to the popularity of the weekend.

The Club saw a 20% increase in membership for this day, a huge increase on the previous two years, which resulted in the members enclosure being just as full as what it was on Cup Day and the place to be seen.

‘The feedback we have received regarding the race day and the festival has been truly amazing. I can’t begin to tell you how completely thrilled I am at the outcome of this weekend. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect on race day and the comments those involved have been receiving make all of the hard work worth while!’

‘We all knew on the day that it was going to be a good result when we ran out of racebooks early in the piece, which has never happened in my time. Plus many of the food vendors sold out at the end of the day, the camping and members area were full and the entries into our competition were coming in fast,’ Event, Sales & Marketing Manager Vanessa Briody said.

Race commentator Jack Styring, mentioned over the loud speaker that it was the best day of racing at Avoca he had ever seen. All races saw close finishes, with the feature race, the Mount Avoca Handicap, won by a Darren Weir trained horse, Itsanonna, and ridden by Gary Murphy. Following close behind was Views trained by Leah Rogers and ridden by Christine Puls and third was Kala Princess.

The atmosphere oncourse was festive with plenty of laughter, cheering and dancing. Patrons enjoyed a jam packed day of activities including 2UP, eight piece Biggish Band, the Creswick Light Horse Troop, a World War II ex-military vehicle parade, the Pyrenees food and wine court, plenty of kids activities and the Great Avoca Grape Competition won by two local boys.

Tourism Victoria, Country Racing Victoria, Avoca Shire Turf Club, Pyrenees Grapegrowers and Winemakers Association, the Pyrenees Shire and PJA Accountants & Business Advisors, all combined resources to put on the Pyrenees Festival of Racing & Tasting for the benefit of the race day and the Pyrenees region, and its first year can only be described as a huge success.

The Club has even bigger plans for the festival next year when ANZAC Day falls over the same weekend as Easter. Bookings are coming in for the Avoca Cup and ANZAC Day in next season already. For more details on the Avoca Shire Turf Club and their events please visit www.avocaraceclub.com.

Avoca Shire Turf Club very pleased with the PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup….

It was a wild week of weather leading up to the PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup for what it seemed like everywhere except Avoca.

The racecourse received around 16mls mostly on the Tuesday and Wednesday in the week leading up to the Cup which they would have put on the track anyhow. However the Club had some concern that the weather in other areas would impact upon the crowd, particularly with the transfer occurring with the Moe Cup.

The figures are still being added up, however initial calculations are looking to be somewhere in excess of 5,500 so just approaching last year’s attendance figures.

Avoca Shire Turf Club - Avoca Cup

“Although it seems we will be slightly down from last year, we are extremely pleased with this result. It rained in Ballarat pretty much all week as well as Melbourne, and this would have had an affect on those people who make up their mind about coming in the week leading up to the day.”

“The day itself was a bit chilly reaching a top of 16 degrees, however we were lucky that it was clear for the entire day. Given a nice week of weather we would have been expecting over 7,000 people but in comparison to other Clubs who raced over that week we thank ourselves very lucky for the weather that we did receive.” Marketing & Events Manager, Vanessa Briody said.

The PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup was won by Escape Artist, ridden by Ben Knobel and trained by Peter White. The owners were very excited with the win, topping off what had already been a great day out for them.

Stryde Fashions on the Field was a big event with the stunning Christine Toohey from Ballarat winning the Stryde Lady of Day, who can now not only enjoy over $2,400 of prizes, but has a chance to win the state title as an entrant in the Country’s Best Dressed Racegoer.

Ballarat Band Spoon were thoroughly enjoyed by patrons who were enjoying a glass of local Blue Pyrenees wine and a gourmet lunch from one of the food stalls, who nearly all sold out on the day.

‘We are very proud of how the day turned out, which can greatly be attributed to a hard working team of staff and local community groups, along with over 160 volunteers,’ Club CEO, Raelene Murray said. ‘The crowd was well behaved and whilst we celebrate another successful race meeting, we are also now looking forward to the Mount Avoca ANZAC Day Races, which will be held on a long weekend next year.’

The Avoca Shire Turf Club wish all of the other Victorian Clubs holding a Spring Racing Cup the very best, along with their fashions winner Christine Toohey, who can be voted for online by visiting www.springracingcarnival.com.au.

Two guest judges to sit on fashions panel at the PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup…

Some will head to the PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup for the racing, others for the social atmosphere but many come simply to enter one of the biggest fashions competitions in all of country racing Victoria. This year helping the sponsors judge will be Country Racing Victoria Ambassador, Sally-Anne Marshall and last year’s Lady of the Day winner, Linda Fahy.

Sally-Anne, married to champion ex-jockey Simon Marshall, has a racing and fashion pedigree and the Avoca Shire Turf Club are very excited to host her for the day. Sally-Anne has been involved with judging dozens of fashions events and knows exactly what she is looking for in a winner.

Linda Fahy, runner up in Country’s Best Dressed Racegoer competition due to her win at the Avoca Cup last year, won Lady of the Day wearing a black and white detail dress, with black satin gloves and a black lace parasol. Owner of Ruby’s Millinery, Linda is passionate about spring racing because of her and her husband’s lifetime involvement within the thoroughbred industry. Linda has done well in metro fashions events and has a great eye for detail.

Almost $5,500 of prizes are up for grabs, making Stryde Fashions on the Field the biggest fashions event ever held at the Cup in its 152 year history. There are four categories open for entry, which include Stryde Lady of the Day, Coco & Co Most Contemporary Outfit, Heritage on Lydiard Best Dressed Gent and Mojo Photography Couple of the Day.

Sally AnnThe Stryde Lady of the Day winner will take home fabulous prizes to the sum of $2,300 including a $500 Stryde voucher; $500 Mirenesse gift basket; a $300 Heritage on Lydiard accommodation voucher; $150 Rings on Her Fingers voucher, plus 2 fascinators and a 4 week jewelry course; $250 Coco Pink voucher, 2 make up sessions, 3 spray tans and an eyebrow shaping appointment by Madam Butterfly; a $150 Mojo Photography voucher; a bottle of Blue Pyrenees wine & 5 tickets to the Mount Avoca ANZAC Day races.

Most Contemporary Outfit, this year sponsored by brand new Ballarat store Coco & Co, will be a popular category with a $500 Coco & Co voucher up for grabs plus prizes from Madam Butterfly and Mojo Photography.

For those couples who look the part together, the Mojo Photography Couple of the Day is the category to enter with over $1,000 of prizes in the pool, including a $300 Mojo Photography voucher.

The men will not be ignored for their efforts with the Heritage on Lydiard Best Dressed Gent category. Boasting over $1,300 in prizes which includes a $750 Heritage on Lydiard accommodation voucher, it is worth that little bit of extra effort.

‘Year upon year we have seen Fashions on the Field become increasingly popular, particularly now the prize pool has grown from $500 to almost 11 times that in the past two years. Last year Avoca’s entrant came runner up in Country’s Best Dressed Racegoer and I am hoping that the Lady of the Day winner from this years’ event will take home this title as well,’ Marketing & Events Manager Vanessa Briody said.

But you don’t have to be in it to win it, with every entrant in Lady of the Day receiving a Mirenesse Secret Weapon travel mascara upon registering.

Chances of meeting someone are “odds on favourite”….
Tuesday 25th August, 2009

Not only do the Avoca Races provide a day for friends and family to catch up, for hens and bucks to celebrate their last days of freedom, or for work colleagues to get together socially, but now the PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup also provides the chance for singles to find love in ‘The Parade Ring’.

Teaming up with Ballarat based business ‘Not Just Drinx,’ the Avoca Shire Turf Club is very excited to have this package on offer for singles over 25. Included in the package is access to The Parade Ring, admission, a stand up luncheon, an all inclusive beverage package and a racebook for circling your bets, or even better…someone’s phone number. The package also includes an entry pass into Rafters nightclub, at The George Hotel so those in Ballarat can continue the celebrations after the races.

Nicole and Janine from ‘Not Just Drinx’ will host the enclosure providing plenty of fun games and activities. This among a seven race program, live music, fashions and local food and wine, will provide plenty to do in between meeting singles from all across Victoria.

Janine

Marketing and Events Manager Vanessa Briody has been hoping to get this off the ground for a couple of years now, ‘There has been quite a bit of publicity of late about a drought of another sort with more single men to women. Given this race day has a complete mix of country and city patrons and generally more women than men, we are hoping a few matches will be made by the last at Caulfield.’

‘Nicole and Janine are both lovely hosts and will make those flying solo or otherwise in groups feel very welcome. In celebration of its first year, the Club will also offer up the racecourse as a venue to hold a wedding for the first couple that becomes engaged from meeting in The Parade Ring. We have plenty of weddings held at the racecourse and this would be the perfect way to remember the place where they first met,’ Briody said.

The PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup is being held this year on Saturday the 17th of October and singles can mingle in The Parade Ring for just $135 per person or $150 with bus transport from Ballarat. Bookings can be made by contacting Vanessa Briody on 0402 9979 26 or vanessa.briody@bigpond.com or calling Nicole on 0407 097 616.

August, 2009

Taking on this role will give me the opportunity to work alongside the committee and with the local community to ensure visitors continue to look towards the Pyrenees as a favourite tourism destination.”

“I am looking forward to the challenge of working with the Clubs’ Event and Marketing Manager to ensure the two race meetings go on attracting thousands of visitors to the region as well as continuing to increase the use of the modern function centre at the racecourse. The Avoca Shire Turf Club announces new sponsors of the Avoca Cup….
Wednesday 1st July, 2009

Today marked a day that will go down in the Avoca Shire Turf Club’s history books as they announced the new sponsors of the Avoca Cup. The Club was pleased to confirm Avoca and Melbourne based business, PJA Accountants & Business Advisors and ever-popular local winery, Blue Pyrenees Estate, will join in partnership to sponsor the newly named PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup.

‘The Avoca Shire Turf Club is very excited about the new five year partnership. Having a joint sponsorship isn’t all that common with events, however we saw it as a great opportunity to not only highlight what the Pyrenees region is known for, its fantastic wines, but also to continue to develop a relationship with a long standing partner of the Club who brings an abundance of ideas and expertise to the table,’ Gus Harrison, Club Manager said.

‘Blue Pyrenees Estate were previous sponsors of our Labour Day races which now is no longer on our racing calendar so it is wonderful to have this opportunity of partnership once again. The Blue Pyrenees label is widely known and loved throughout Australia and we believe will appeal to those considering heading to the Cup, particularly for some famous local sparkling wine. We are very much looking forward to brainstorming our ideas which we hope will not only bring people to the races, but also to this fantastic wine growing region,’ Marketing & Events Manager, Vanessa Briody said.

Peter Jess from PJA Accountants & Business Advisors has always been a supporter of the Avoca races along with many other events within the region. He is also well known for his successful sports management business, which will enable the Avoca Shire Turf Club to draw from his innovative marketing and management strategies and experience within the sporting industry.

Along with the new partnership will be a new-look Cup race. For the first time in the Club’s history the Cup race, now the PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup, will be ran over 1860m as opposed to 1800m. The distance has been changed so the Club can continue to provide all marquee holders with a track view on race day. Previously the barriers for the race were taking up room on the infield and now this has been altered the Club will be able to fulfill the increase in marquee bookings.

The PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup is being held this year on Saturday the 17th of October and bookings can be made by calling Vanessa Briody on 0402 9979 26 or emailing vanessa.briody@bigpond.com.
